Save the Date Message: When to Send It and What to Write

The rishta is settled, the families have agreed on dates, and the halls are being booked. Before the cards are ready, there is one message worth sending: the save the date.

Quick answer: a save the date message tells guests the couple's names, the wedding date (or dates) and the city, and says a formal card will follow. Send it 3–6 months before the wedding to anyone who has to travel or take leave, and 2–3 months before to local guests. Keep it to three or four lines; the full programme goes on the card later.

Why a save the date matters more now

Ten years ago most Pakistani families skipped it. The card went out a month before, and that was enough. Two things have changed.

First, the season is moving. Tribune's T-Magazine reports that October is the new December: with families avoiding Muharram, Safar and Ramazan, and venues charging up to 20% more in December, more weddings now fall in October and November, and the season stretches all the way to March. Weddings land on more dates, so guests have more clashes.

Second, half the family is abroad. A cousin in Dubai or an uncle in Birmingham needs to book leave and flights, and fares only go up as December gets closer. A card that arrives four weeks before is too late for them. A save the date three or four months ahead gives them time.

When to send a save the date

  • Overseas relatives: 4–6 months before. As soon as the date is fixed is not too early.
  • Guests from other cities: 3–4 months before, so they can plan leave and travel from Karachi to Lahore, or Peshawar to Islamabad.
  • Local guests: 2–3 months before, or skip it and send the card 4–6 weeks before.
  • Only once the date is final. Wait until both families agree and the main hall is booked. Changing a date you announced is far more awkward than announcing it a week later.

What to include in a save the date message

  • The couple's names, or "our daughter Ayesha" if the message is from her parents.
  • The date or the week. If there are several events, give the range: "15–19 December 2026".
  • The city. The hall can wait; the city is what people need to plan travel.
  • "Formal invitation to follow". This tells guests the details are coming, so they do not ask about timings now.
  • Who it is from, especially if it might be forwarded.

Leave out times, menus and dress codes. They change, and they belong on the card.

Save the date!
Ayesha & Hamza
are getting married, inshaAllah
Thursday, 17 December 2026 · Lahore
Formal invitation to follow.

From the parents

Assalam o Alaikum! With the blessings of Allah, our daughter Ayesha's shaadi with Hamza, son of Javed Iqbal, has been fixed for 15–19 December 2026 in Lahore. Please keep these dates free. The card with full details will follow. — Tariq Mehmood & family

For relatives abroad

Usman bhai, early news for you, Hina bhabhi and the kids in Toronto: Ayesha's shaadi is set for 15–19 December 2026 in Lahore, inshaAllah. We wanted you to know before fares go up and before you plan leave. Mehndi, barat and walima are all that week. The full card will come in November. Please try to be here!

Save the date for nikah

Some couples have a small nikah first and the rukhsati months later, or a nikah in October and the big events in December. Say clearly which one you are announcing:

Save the date
The Nikah of Zainab & Bilal
Saturday, 28 November 2026 · Islamabad
InshaAllah. Details to follow.

If only close family is invited to the nikah, send this one privately rather than in the family group.

Save the date in Urdu

For elders, an Urdu message reads more naturally than "save the date". The usual phrase is "تاریخ محفوظ کر لیجیے" (keep the date free):

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
تاریخ محفوظ کر لیجیے
عائشہ و حمزہ کی شادی
ان شاء اللہ ۱۵ تا ۱۹ دسمبر ۲۰۲۶، لاہور
باقاعدہ دعوت نامہ بعد میں ارسال کیا جائے گا۔
طارق محمود و اہلِ خانہ
A save the date card in Urdu with the date written in Urdu

If your formal card will be an Urdu nikah card in Nastaliq, an Urdu save the date sets the tone. A shorter version for WhatsApp:

السلام علیکم! الحمدللہ، عائشہ کی شادی کی تاریخ طے ہو گئی ہے: ۱۷ دسمبر ۲۰۲۶، لاہور۔ براہِ کرم یہ دن خالی رکھیے۔ کارڈ بعد میں بھیجیں گے۔

Save the date in Roman Urdu

Assalam o Alaikum! Alhamdulillah Ayesha aur Hamza ki shaadi ki date fix ho gayi hai: 15 se 19 December 2026, Lahore. Abhi bas yeh dates free rakhiye, card baad mein bhejenge. InshaAllah aap sab ko aana hai!
Save the date! Zainab aur Bilal ka nikah, Saturday 28 November, Islamabad. Details jald bhejenge.

Save the date card or just a message?

A text message is enough for most families. A picture card is worth it when you want the save the date to feel like part of the wedding, or when it will be forwarded around a large family group. If you make one, keep it to the names, the date and the city in large type, and use the same colours you plan for the main nikah invitation card: emerald and gold now, emerald and gold in December. The live invitation demos help you settle on a look early.

Send the picture first and the message second, so the text shows in the chat list. Our guide to the wedding invitation message for WhatsApp covers that and other sending habits.

Then the formal card, then a reminder

The save the date is step one of three:

  1. Save the date, 3–6 months before: names, date, city.
  2. The formal card, 4–6 weeks before: every event with its day, time and venue, in English or Urdu. Make it on the nikah and shaadi card maker, as one card with up to four events or one card per event, and download the WhatsApp picture and a PDF to print.
  3. A reminder, the evening before each event, with the location pin.

If you would rather send one link than several pictures, an invitation website holds the programme, Google Maps directions and RSVP with guest count, so you know how many are coming from abroad. The full plan for the months in between is in our shaadi checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is a save the date necessary for a Pakistani wedding?

It is not a tradition, but it is now very useful. If most of your guests live in the same city and the wedding is six weeks away, you can skip it and send the card. If anyone has to fly in or take leave, send one.

Does everyone who gets a save the date have to get a card?

Yes. A save the date is a promise of an invitation, so only send it to people you are sure you will invite. Keep the save-the-date list smaller than the card list if you are still deciding.

What if the date changes after we send the save the date?

Tell everyone personally and quickly, ideally with a call to elders and a short message to the rest: "Change of date: the shaadi is now on…". Do not just post a new card and hope people notice.

Should the save the date be in Urdu or English?

Use the language your guests read most easily. Many families send English to friends and relatives abroad and Urdu to elders in Pakistan, with the same date in both.
