You can spend a week polishing a CV and still lose to a candidate with half your experience, because their file was easier for a computer to read. The good news: you can test that before you apply.
Quick answer: upload your CV as PDF or Word to a free ATS score checker and you get a score out of 100 plus a list of what passed and failed. On the ChatWrapper checker, 80+ is a good ATS score, under 60 needs work, and a score of 0 usually means your PDF is a scanned image the software can't read at all.
What an ATS score actually means
Companies that get hundreds of applications, banks, telecoms, multinationals and most Gulf employers, run them through an Applicant Tracking System. The ATS pulls the text out of your file, works out your contact details, jobs, dates and education, and compares your words with the job ad.
An ATS score checker copies that process. It tells you two things:
- Can the software read you? Real text, sensible layout, headings it recognises.
- Do you match this job? If you paste the ad, how many of its keywords are in your resume.
There is no single official score that every company uses. Each employer's system is a little different. But the problems that break one ATS break most of them, so fixing them helps everywhere.

Each check explained
Here is what the ATS resume checker looks at, why it matters and what to do if it fails.
Contact details found
It looks for your phone number and email. If the recruiter shortlists you but the system couldn't pull your number, nobody calls. Put your name, phone, email and city as plain text at the top of the page, not inside a Word header, an image or an icon.
Standard section headings
Software looks for headings like Experience, Education and Skills to know what each part is. "My Story" or "Academic Journey" may not be recognised, and then your degree gets read as a job. Use plain, common headings.
Real text, not a scanned image
This is the big one. If you scanned a signed printout or took a phone photo of your CV and saved it as PDF, the file is a picture. The ATS reads nothing, which is why the score drops to 0. Always export from Word or a resume maker.
Dates consistent
Mixing "2019–2021", "Mar 22 to now" and "since last year" confuses systems that calculate your years of experience. Use one format for every job, like "Mar 2022 – Present".
Length
Too short (a few lines) looks empty, too long (four or five pages listing every certificate since matric) buries the important parts. Aim for 1 page if you're a fresh graduate and 2 pages if you have several years of experience.
Bullet points
Long paragraphs are hard for software and humans. Short bullets starting with an action word, with a number where possible, score better: "Trained 14 new staff on the POS system" beats a five-line paragraph.
No tables or columns problems
Two-column layouts, sidebars and text boxes often get read left to right across the page, mixing your skills into your job history. A single-column layout avoids this completely.
Keywords
If you paste a job ad, the checker lists which of its keywords are missing from your CV. Add the ones that are honestly true for you, in your summary, skills and job bullets. Our guide to ATS resume keywords walks through this with a full example.
What is a good ATS score?
| Score | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 80–100 | Good. The software reads you well and you match the job. | Apply. Tweak keywords for each new job. |
| 60–79 | Fair. Readable, but some checks fail or keywords are missing. | Fix the failed checks first, then add missing keywords. |
| 1–59 | Needs work. Layout or structure is hurting you. | Move to a single-column ATS design and rebuild. |
| 0 | Usually a scanned or image-only PDF. | Make a new file from Word or a resume maker. |
Don't chase 100. A score in the 80s with honest keywords is far better than a 98 built on skills you can't explain in the interview.
Example: from 41 to 86
Take an example: Ayesha Khan is an English teacher in Lahore applying for a coordinator role at a private school group. Her first check scored 41. The problems:
- A two-column Canva design with her skills in a coloured sidebar.
- Headings called "About Me" and "My Journey".
- Dates written three different ways.
- Missing keywords from the ad: "curriculum planning", "teacher training", "Cambridge O Level", "parent-teacher meetings".
She tapped "Fix my CV", picked the Navy Headings design, renamed her sections to Summary, Experience, Education and Skills, set all dates to "Aug 2021 – Present" style, and rewrote two bullets:
- "Led curriculum planning for Grade 8–10 English across 3 campuses."
- "Ran teacher training workshops for 20 staff on Cambridge O Level marking."
She also added "Conducted monthly parent-teacher meetings" because she did. New score: 86. Same teacher, same experience, readable file.
How to improve ATS score quickly
- Fix 0 first. If the file is a scan, nothing else matters until it is real text.
- Switch to one column. The ATS resume maker has 8 free single-column designs, including Skills First for IT and Fresh Graduate for your first job.
- Rename your headings. Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Languages.
- Make dates match. One format, top to bottom.
- Paste the job ad. Add the missing keywords you genuinely have.
- Download the right format. PDF or Word (.docx), whichever the portal asks for.
Check before every important application
A free ATS score check takes a minute. Do it once to fix your layout, then again with each job ad you care about, because the keyword part changes every time. If a Rozee or LinkedIn application, or a job in Dubai or Riyadh, really matters to you, that minute is worth it.
