You applied to 40 jobs on Rozee and LinkedIn and heard back from two. Your degree is fine, your experience is fine. The problem may be that no human ever saw your CV.
Quick answer: an ATS friendly resume is a resume that hiring software can read correctly: one column, real selectable text, standard headings like "Experience" and "Education", simple dates, and the keywords from the job ad. If the software can't read it, it gets a low match score and a recruiter never opens it.
What is ATS?
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It is the software a company uses to collect, sort and filter job applications. When you click "Apply" on a company careers page, your file usually goes into an ATS first.
The system does three things with your resume:
- Reads it. It pulls the text out of your PDF or Word file and tries to find your name, phone, email, jobs, dates, degrees and skills.
- Matches it. It compares your words with the words in the job ad. "Excel", "B2B sales", "IELTS 7", "SAP" and so on.
- Ranks it. The recruiter sees a list sorted by match. With 600 applicants for one post, they rarely scroll past the first 30–50.
So the ATS isn't really "rejecting" you. It is just putting you at the bottom of a pile that nobody reaches.
Who uses ATS in Pakistan and the Gulf
- Big companies and multinationals. Banks, telecoms, FMCG, pharma and Big Four firms take applications through their own careers portals, which run on ATS software.
- Rozee.pk. Employers on Rozee can filter and search applicants by skills, experience and keywords, so the words in your profile and CV decide whether you show up.
- LinkedIn. "Easy Apply" sends your resume and profile to the employer, who can filter by keywords and screening answers. Recruiters also search LinkedIn by keyword.
- Gulf employers. Companies and agencies in UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar receive thousands of applications from Pakistan, India and beyond. ATS screening is normal there.
Government jobs through FPSC, PPSC or NTS work differently: you fill their online form and sit a test. For those, a proper Pakistani CV with father's name, CNIC and domicile is still useful at the interview stage, but ATS rules matter less.

ATS resume format: the rules that matter
You don't need to know how each system works inside. If you follow these rules, almost every ATS can read you.
1. One column, top to bottom
Sidebars and two-column layouts look smart, but many systems read straight across the page. Your skills end up glued into the middle of your job titles. Use one column.
2. Real text, never a scan
If you printed your CV, signed it and scanned it at a photocopy shop, the file is a picture. The ATS sees a blank page. Same for a phone photo of a printed CV. Always export straight from Word or a resume maker.
3. Standard section headings
Use the words the software expects: Summary, Experience (or Work Experience), Education, Skills, Certifications, Languages. "My Journey" or "Where I've Been" confuses it.
4. Simple, consistent dates
Write every date the same way, for example "Jan 2022 – Mar 2024" or "01/2022 – 03/2024". Pick one style and stick to it. Write "Present" for your current job.
5. Contact details in the body, not the header
Some systems skip the Word header and footer area. Put your name, phone, email, city and LinkedIn link at the top of the page itself.
6. Keywords from the job ad
If the ad says "customer relationship management", write that phrase, not only "CRM" or "client handling". Use the exact words where they honestly describe you.
7. Bullet points, not paragraphs
Short bullets starting with an action word ("Managed", "Reduced", "Trained") are easy for software and humans to scan. Add a number wherever you can.
Do and don't list
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Single-column layout | Sidebars, text boxes, two columns |
| Common fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman) | Fancy script or decorative fonts |
| Headings like Experience, Education, Skills | Creative headings or icons instead of words |
| PDF or Word made from real text | Scanned PDF or phone photo of a printed CV |
| Skills written as words | Star ratings or progress bars for skills |
| Same date format everywhere | "2019 to now", "Mar-21", "since 2020" mixed together |
| 1 page (fresh) or 2 pages (experienced) | 4-page CVs with every school certificate listed |
| Name the file "Ayesha-Khan-Resume.pdf" | "CV final final (2).pdf" |

No photo, no CNIC, no father's name, no religion. Those belong on a Pakistani-style CV for local jobs that ask for them, not on a resume going into an ATS.

Keep two versions
Most Pakistani job seekers need two documents. A plain ATS friendly resume for Rozee, LinkedIn, multinationals and Gulf jobs. And a local CV with photo, CNIC and domicile for government departments, schools and family-run firms that still want it. Make both once, then tailor the keywords for each job you apply to. That small habit is the difference between 40 applications and silence, and 15 applications and three interview calls.
